Among Late-Night Writers, Few Women in the Room

Based off this article, I’ve formulate my personal top 6 issues I have with Late-Night

1. Letterman’s audience is 55 percent women; Mr. Leno’s is more than 53 percent, and Mr. O’Brien’s just over one half. Yet barely any female writers
2. If a “dude” is the host, you have to write like a dude. Think about it, all late night hosts, minus the newly added Chelsea Handler, are guys. So where are the opportunities for women?
3. Letterman’s scandal pretty much cast a shadow on women working for late-night TV.
4. “Boy Humor” is keeping women away from late-night jobs, according to the article. Yet the audience, which over half are women, seem to be eating it up. So why not give them a chance?
5. Mr. Kimmel and Mr. Leno both have female executive producers. So big deal, there’s one female in charge. What about all the other positions.
6. And it’s now official: Women dominate men at every level of higher education, in terms of degrees conferred. Yet the entry level jobs for women writers on television is mostly held by men. Interesting.

This week, the stars of the vampire movie New Moon were taking over late night TV.

I personally don’t read the books, but I have enjoyed the vampire shows and movies Vampire Diaries, Tru Blood, and Twilight. Twilight was not expected to be as big as a craze as it has become, so the first movie did not have that much funding. Now, with more money backing the cult-like following series, New Moon is getting tons of press.

Getting Tickets: online, in person or stand-by

1) Pick a destination

• Leno or Conan: California (CBS)
  
• Letterman or Fallon: New York (NBC)
  

2) Phone or in person

This requires a little planning. So choose a date with your friends or family and take these steps…

Jimmy Fallon

• Call to book one month in advance- say date preference and your contact information
• Can book 4 tickets
• New “Band Benches” seats set aside for fans of musical guests. You need to visit www.fallonbandbench.com and enter code

Dave Letterman:

• Fill out online form.

Conan O’Brien:

• Send info below to ConanTickets@nbc.com or mail Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien Studio
• 4 dates you’d like to attend in order of preference.
• Full Name, email address, mailing address, and phone number.
• Number of tickets (limit is 4)

Jay Leno

• Send a self-addressed stamped envelope with:
• Brief letter listing the desired date of taping and three alternate dates
• Send 6 weeks in advance
• Tickets will be sent out 2-3 weeks prior to the show

3) Stand in Line

It’s probably the easiest way and if your trip is spur of the moment, this is the way to go. Fallon and Letterman seem to be the main two late night shows that let people wait stand-by for their show.

• Fallon: arrive no later than 9:00 a.m. on the morning of the taping under “NBC Studios”
• Only one ticket will be issued per person.  A standby ticket does not guarantee admission. You’ll be given a ticket in line and then asked to come back at the time of the filming. A certain number of people will be called in. The number is based on your place in line.
  
• Letterman: Standby via phone, call (212) 247-6497, at 11 a.m. on the day you wish to attend. Then go to studio, but do not line up before 9 a.m.

4) Less familiar ticket-getting options

Check the Desk

• Fallon: will be placed at the NBC Studio Tour Desk on the second floor of the NBC Experience Store in Rockefeller Plaza.
• Letterman: Check in at the theater no later than 1 hour before taping. Desk hours are Monday – Thursday: 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m
• Conan: The Box Office opens at 8am on the day of the show, are distributed on a first come first served basis, two tickets per person. Audience members must be at least

Find a friend that works at the studio

• For example when Conan used to be on Late Night, a very small amount of VIP tickets were given out for each show. Sorry, I would not be one of those “friends.” I neither work there nor do I know anyone that does. Sorry guys!

Check eBay or Craigslist

• Some people who have extra tickets sell their tickets online. Try the New York Craigslist site (listed in the “Resources” section below).

Check Twitter

• Information about last minute ticket openings are advertised through Late Night’s Twitter updates.

Check TVTix.com

• Offers free tickets to live tapings in N.Y. and L.A. If interested in The Jay Leno Show fill out a request form on their website and TVTix will email you back within a half hour

• The “Late Show” and “The Late Late Show” with Craig Ferguson both post audience growth compared to premiere week last year.
• The Late Late Show beat out Jimmy Fallon in household views by 50%.
• Ending the Oct. 30 week, Letterman pulled 40 million viewers, Conan O’Brien 2.4 million viewers, and Jimmy Kimmel 1.7 million viewers

Conan has an avid fan base and sites dedicated to his sense of humor. So what is the problem with his new show?

Apparently Conan fans are watching more online. One of the biggest draws on NBC.com is Conan’s ‘In the Year 3000′ sketch.’ Instead of tuning in, his fan base is picking over his video clips.

• Posted by: wsapnin on June 2, 2009– I never liked Leno. He did 2 bits I would watch 1) Headlines 2) Jay Walking. Other than that, I never found him funny or a good interviewer. It’s just that the people who don’t ‘get’ Letterman had nothing else to watch in that timeslot.

• Posted by: Caroline on June 2, 2009– I think the major question on most people’s minds isn’t whether Conan will be funny — you either already think he is or he isn’t — but whether he’ll be able to draw Leno’s audience. My parents, who are late-generation boomers, love Leno and can’t stand Conan. I could take or leave Leno but really, really love Conan. It could just be a generational thing.

I’ve been trying to give that guy a chance every now and then for the last ‘umpteen’ years and I have yet to find anything he does even mildly amusing. I just always just assumed you had to be from New York to appreciate his humor.

iPhone apps are taking over the world! A voice synthesizer on a phone? Realistically, I don’t think anyone would ever use this application, but the clip is pretty funny. Obama’s a President that is notorious for being in the public eye as a celebrity. T-Pain turning him into a singer is so fitting. The Health Care plan as a song… genius!

NBC’s competitor in late night, CBS, has also recently changed their slogan, but not so much their image. Instead of “CBS: It’s All Here” their 2009 slogan is “Only CBS.”

In honor of the two rival stations recent changes, lets take a look back at what used to be!

NBC told us to “expect big changes” and “things are going to be different” before the show premiered. But the only change I saw was his set. there’s no talk show desk, making the set more comparable to earlier television programing like Oprah and Ellen Degeneres.

Also some guests are televised in from a different location. To me, it just looks like he can’t get guests to actually come on the show. For example, Oprah was videoed in on the primer, and Amy Poehler on September 23, 2009.

Another difference, guests are prompted with activities. On his September 23 show, Amy Poehler was asked a series of questions instead of being interviewed. Also Pee-Wee Herman made Jay a salad from a salad bar on set.

But this does not qualify as “non-night talk show.” Jimmy Fallon does this every show with guests. Fallon skill is not interviewing, he’s more the fun loving guy every guest likes to hang out with. To accommodate, Fallon’s show revolves around different “acts” he does with guest.

How Jay is original is beyond me. But his long standing reputation earns him good  ratings, especially his first weeks

When Dave talked about it on TV, the audience laughed after every sentence. Yes, the show is supposed to be a easy late night comedy. But is a right to laugh when blackmail and scandals are involved, especially when the person explaining is involved?

Letterman used the show to clear up his own personal business.The whole ordeal was completely out of character for Late Night comedy. SNL, and other late night hosts like Fallon and Leno made joking remarks about the subject. The fact is, late night hosts like Letterman are not usually the ones taking the punches, they are giving them. Leno said, ““If you came here tonight for sex with a talk show host, you’ve got the wrong studio.

If it was any other TV show, there would be no laughter. Do late night talk shows make us numb to these types of issues? We expect to laugh when we watch these shows.  The audience laughed just they were expected to, not because the topic is actually funny.
